RCB vs MI: the 1st Semi-Final

Mumbai thrashed Bangalore by 35 runs to qualify for the summit clash on Sunday, 25th of April, when they will take on the winners of CSK vs Deccan match that is to be played tomorrow.

Chasing a huge total of 184 for five, the RCB could manage only 149 runs in their stipulated 20 overs, losing 9 wickets. Taylor top scored for them with an unbeaten 31. But that was it, and there were no other significant contributions from their side. Dravid and Utthapa's brief cameos were just not enough to drive them home. The pressure of this big total got the better of them in the end.

The RCB were guilty of conceding 77 runs in the last 5 overs of the Mumbai innings, when Tiwary(52) and Pollard(33) collected runs at will propelling their team total beyond the reach of their opposition. At the end of 15 overs, the MI were struggling at 107 for 4, when the Pollard-Tiwary duo took the attack to the RCB camp.

Pollard, who scored yet another match changing knock of 33 in just 13 balls, claimed 3 wickets while bowling, which ensured that MI stay on course for the trophy.

For the RCB, this was their second closest miss to lay their hand on the winners' tropy after their loss in the finals in the last edition. Now they will have to quickly put this behind and get ready for the third place play-off on 24th of this month, that would be the key for a place in the Champions League.

Consolation win for the KKR

So finally KKR got to finish on the same note as they started the tournament, that is with a victory. They started with defeating the Deccans and ended with a victory over a second string Mumbai Indians. One loss too many spoiled their party though. This is the third year in a row, they have failed to qualify for the last four.

The only positive they can carry home at the end of the road in this edition is that, they have put up a much improved show compared to the last two years. Sourav Ganguly, for them, was in dazzling form this summer. He found very little support from the other end, and on those rare occasions when somebody did support him, their bowling and fielding let them down completely. That has been their story.

In this particular match, in reply to 133 scored by the MI, they got home quite comfortably losing just one wicket, that of Sourav Ganguly(42). Brendon McCullum scored an unbeaten half century to guide their side to this huge victory.

Mumbai Indians had gone easy on this match, as they were already in the semifinals. They are now the hot favorites to lift the trophy.

Deccans win five in a row to make it to the semis

This tourney has been a roller coaster ride for the defending champion Deccan Chargers. They started with a loss against the KKR, won their next three games to look strong in this edition and then lost five consecutive matches thanks to some indiffernet effort and found themselves at the brink of elimination. Back against the wall, they had to win all their remaining five matches if they were to move forward.

So they did! They took one match at a time, knocked that off and moved to the next. This encounter against Delhi was a virtual quarter final match. The winner was to go through, the loser had to move out of the race. The Deccan took full advantage of their momentum from the last four matches, while Delhi struggled yet again due to the failure of their top order.

Chasing a total of  145 set by the Deccans( Symonds 54, Mohnish Mishra 25), Delhi fell short by 11 runs. Collingwood with a half century was their only significant contributor.

Now Deccan takes on CSK in the second semi final.

Dhoni powers CSK to the semifinals

When I started writing this post, the KXIP looked like all set to spoil the party for the CSK here at Dharmasala. By the time I was close to half way, Dhoni just blasted his team to a tremendus victory from a hopeless position. The KXIP batted first and put up a huge total (192 for 3) in a match where the CSK had everything to play for. The only incentive for the KXIP here was that they wanted to finish the IPL edition three on a high note. Shaun Marsh top scored for them with an unbeaten 88 from 57 balls. Irfan Pathan, with an useful contribution of 44 off 27 balls made sure that his team gets there, despite of yet another dissapointing inning from Yuvraj Singh.

When Chennai came out to bat, they were banking on Mathew Hayden and Murali Vijay to provide them with a flying start in the power play. That didn't happen, but Suresh Raina, continuing his golden form this season, smashed  46 off 27 balls to keep them in the hunt. Then Badrinath played an excellent knock of 53 in 36 balls. Even after these useful contributions from the atop order, the CSK needed 29 out of the last 12 balls and eventually 16 off the final over. It was left to non other than their skipper Dhoni to get those runs all by himself, which he did by scoring a 29 ball half century.

When he hosted Irfan Pathan for two consecutive sixes to cross over the finishing mark, we saw an emotional outburst from the coolest player on earth. "Yes", he yelled. punching his helmet.

They were in the semis, even though just before a few minutes it looked like adieu for them. Now they are back in the reckonings to go all the way. It would require a helluva lot hard work for them though.

Catching up yet again.......four important matches

It's that bad habit! You allow yourself to go easy on a day for once, you never realise when your old habit of taking things a bit easy, is yet again sneaking in. This is the second time I have to run through few matches, on whcih I have not posted.

As I sit to update this post, we have come in term with the blasts that rocked the close vicinity of the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. This event delayed the match between the RCB and the Mumbai Indians a bit. Lets hope it was just one-off and such things do not  spoil the event and in a larger scale, the image of our country in eyes of the world. Cricket, so far, here has been clear of such incidents in this country and it better stays that way.

We would skip the statistics here and just refresh ourselves with the fact of the matches as far as possible. Statistics anyway, are omnipresent these days, anywhere you like.

The first one was CSK vs the Delhi Dare Devils, in which Chennai slumped to defeat, owing to their own experiment in the top order. Suresh Raina, who was the hero other night, was dropped down the order and it quite easily back fired. Worse, it was a match which they should have won to seal a semi final berth. The DD were like wounded tigers, and such an explosive batting line up can never be taken lightly. Well, this time after another failure in the top order, it took Gautam Gambhir to bat out of his skins to get them home. This indifferent effort left the CSK in a precarious position, from where, if they were to figure in the semis, not only would they have to win against the KXIP handsomely, they would have to pray for the victory/loss of some other teams.

The second match was between the KXIP and the Deccans. Deccan had to win, KXIP had to try and spoil the party. Here, the Deccans kept things simple. Despite of facing a tough target of 174 runs, Rohit Sharma(68 not out in 38 balls) took them home, despite of a few anxious moments through the match. With this victory, the Deccans live to fight another battle.

In the third match, that I have to comment upon, the RCB slumped to a heavy defeat against the Mumbai Indians, which in fact would keep a few other teams interested. As the RCBs finish with 14 points, its now upto the other team who are or who can finish up with same number of points to grab the chance by improving their scoring rate and hoping for the best.

The fourth match was a knock out one, where KKR indeed knocked Rajastan Royals out of the competition and while doing so, gave themselves a chance to move through to the next level. Their fate of course would depend upon how Chennai and Delhi perform on Sunday.

This is the first time in the history of IPL, where such a tough battle is being witnessed till the very last moment for the line up of the semis.

RCB inch closer to semis

Bangalore prevailed in a battle of the royals and took a step closer towards that semi final spot. For this match, the RCB had opted for KP, dropping out Cameron White. KP responed by blasting a 29 ball 62 before being run out thanks to a misunderstanding with Virat Kohli.

Earlier, the RR replicated the KKR performance of the other night and lost 3 quick wicket first up, and then spent the rest of the innings, doing some catching up act big time. Yusuf Pathan has been figured out by all the oppositions by now and in this match it took a single ball from Dale Styen, to peg his stumps back, once he was brought back into the attack against the big hitter to do the job. Voges (28) and Rout(32) brought some kind of respectibility to the score, which at the end of the 20th over read a pathetic 130.

Even though they dismissed Kallis right at the start of the innings, they were presented with the KP storm which just blew them away. The RCB finished the job in 15.4 overs and moved to the second spot in the points table.

One more win should make it for them here on.

Catching up: Mumbai vs Delhi Dare Devils & KKR vs CSK

I had missed parts of the above two matches, hence could not update on time. Now here we are doing some catching up act.

The first match for the day would be remembered for the Kieron Pollard act that left the Delhi Dare Devils gasping for breath. They were running a bit off coulor after their recent slump in form, and this knock from Pollard was like adding insult to injury. He raced to a 13 ball 45 as only he can, with 2 fours and 5 sixes, which took his team total to 183 in 20 overs.

It left Delhi in such a shock that they struggled throughout their innings. Only Warner looked as if he believed they could still manage to win the match, but when he fell for a 15 ball 31, it was all but confirmed that Delhi would not get home. More so, as the Gambhir-Sehwag duo continue to run off color, right through. They were back with the score 75 on board and their team managed another 69 after that, handing Mumbai a victory margin of 39 runs.

Looks like, Delhi are trying their best to run into trouble in days to come.

In the second match, Kolkata could not handle the pressure of a knock out kind of match and started with a disaster by losing 4 wickets within 19 run on the board. It took a brave effort from Angelo Mathews(45) with a bit of support from Manoj Tiwary(27) to put up a total of 139.

This was never going to be enough, and taking the opportunity to improve the net run rate the CSK over hauled the total in only 13.3 overs. Raina with a 39 ball 78 lead the charge.

With this huge victory, the CSK took the second place in the points table.

Deccan keep their hope alive

Dale Styen's terrific spell of 4-18 restricted the Deccans at 151 in their stipulated 20 overs as only Rohit Sharma (51) and Manish Mishra (41) could come up with notable scores.

But they didn't lose hope, came out hard at the RCB. Dravid, carrying on from where he had left, scored a 35 ball 49, and as soon as he departed, their innings started to fall apart. Only Uthappa threatened to run away with the match again, smashing Ryan Harris for 21 runs in the 18th over, but in the 19th over, Harmeet Singh castled him in the very first delivery of the 19th over and the match was as good as over.

As the wickets are slowing down considerably at the end of a long gruelling season, the slower bowlers are starting to make more and more impact. Harmeet, by no means express at 120 KMPH, bowled a slower leg break, forcing Uthappa play all over it. The very next ball was a much similar delivery that trapped Styen at the front. It was a good show from this young man Harmeet, who finally has started contributing in an effective manner from the last couple of matches.

The RCB, still hang on to the second spot in the points table on net run rate, but the Deccans have moved two spots over the CSK and the KKR.

Vintage Sachin take MI to semis

Sachin nearing the twilight of his career, shows no signs of it, rather, he looks like being at the peak of his batting form. Every time his team is in trouble, he produces a special knock. Tonight, he desparately wanted to win it for his side. The Mumbai Indians, after coming to the verge of making it to the semi finals, had lost two consecutive matches and it looked as if they had lost momentum even in the begining of this match as they lost three wickets with not too many runs on the board. At this point, Tendulkar took over. Sensing that MI's fortune is entirely dependent on him, he decided to do what he does best, dominate. He found a sensible partner in Duminy(31) and then in Pollard (25). He then batted through the innings scoring 89 runs off 59 balls making sure his team reaches a good total (174-5).

Rajastan Royal, coming out to bat, started disastrously. Warne then delayed sending in Yusuf Pathan to such an extent that, when he came in, he had to smash every ball out of the park. He caould not, and the Royals lost royally(137, lost by 37 runs). Well, Yusuf scored a 100 off just 37 balls in the opening stages of the event, he can hit the ball hard and long, but that no way means he should be sent in only when your side needs 100 runs out of 37 balls. This is where the RR are struggling.

They have to win all their remaining matches hereafter.

KXIP down Delhi Dare Devils

Even though it' a few matches too late for the KXIP, still they have a point to prove. They are a talented side and before bowing out, they just want to show what they are capable of, by beating the best of them in the tourney. Earlier, it was KKR, then Mumbai Indians and this afternoon, they chose Delhi Dare Devils for the treatment.

Irfan Pathan picked up three wickets, Piyush Chawla two and Theron, Ablish and Yuvraj Singh picked up one wicket each. Added to that Gambhir and Warner were run out, and Delhi had absolutely no momentum in the innings. They struggled all the way before being all out for 111 in 19.4 overs.

In reply, KXIP overhauled the total, losing just three wickets. Mahela(38) and Sangakkara(33) were the main scorer for them.

Even though the KXIP have no interest left in the event, they are making sure that we never have a dull moment watching them play, or are they? If they keep on winning in such one-sided manner, the matches may still tun boring.

Uthappa, Dravid help RCB down KKR

KKR, yet again were upto a flier right at the start of their innings with good knocks from Ganguly(33) and Gayle(34), but once both were back in the dugout, their team went into a self destruction mode and kept on losing wickets regularly. Only McCullum stood firm with a useful knock of  45 that saw them posting this decent total of 160.

Decent it was, but against a strong batting line up like the RCBs, it was never going to be enough. Dravid making amends to his last outing at one drop, this time played an excellent knock of 52 off 35 balls. Then came in Uthappa and within a space of 22 balls, he destroyed whatever hope KKR had till that point of time. He scored 52 not out in those balls with 5 sixes and 3 fours, which must have made the selectors think if they missed a trick by not picking a lad who is going through the form of his life.

RCB though, with this win took the second place in the table yet again.

Deccan Hang on with win over CSK

It was yet another do or die match for the Deccans and they responded well. They have only themselves to blame to be in such a precarious situatiion and on Saturday afternoon, they yet again pulled their weight together and ensured that they are not knocked out of the tourney.

While on the field, they bowled and fielded well, Ryan Harris capturing 3 wickets, and restricted CSK to just 138 runs. From Chennai, Only Suresh Raina(52) could put up a decent contribution. Murli Vijay, their star off late, could manage only 23 before he ran himself out, and the CSK continued to struggle right through their innings.

Deccan Chargers, when they came out to bat, started well with Manish Mishra(21) hitting some lusty blows, and Suman(55), continuing his good form scored another half century. Towards the end Symonds stood firm to score a characteristic 27 not out and guided them home.

CSK at the end of this day are tied with Deccan and KKR, which means all these three teams now have equal chances to make it to the semi finals.

KXIP prevail over Mumbai Indians

After having a dream run for the whole season, Mumbai Indians have hit rough weathers just when they needed one more victory to make it to the semi finals. They have still four matches to go, so not much of a worry for them, but then whoever believes that cricket has lot to do with momenturm, would not like what he saw last night. The MI slumped to their second successive defeat as they struggled against a brilliant spell by Piyush Chawla (3-24), ably supported by Irfan Pathan (3-29). Mumbai could manage only 154 for 9 as Love Ablish, playing his 1st match, wrecked them in the 29th over, only conceding a couple of runs and claiming a couple of wickets. Added to that, another wicket fell in the over as a runout.

Piyush Chawla bowled in the right areas with subtle variations, claiming the most consistent Tendulkar (29), a dangerous looking Rayudu (33) and Saurav Tiwary (4). His spell broke the back of the Mumbai batting line up, who could never recover from the triple blow. It was only JP Duminy's 35 that helped them cross the 150 mark.

KXIP came out to bat with nothing to lose, as they had already been out of the race, and batted quite freely. Opening with Mahela (31) has proved to be a very good move for them as he along with Barath (35) provided a flying start to their innings and Kumara Sangakkara took it from there with a brilliant 56 off 42 balls. It was a relatively easier victoy for the KXIP.

At the presentations, though Sachin said that there in nothing to worry, deep down, he would like to that one victory at the earliest and breathe easy.

Suman-Symonds duo secure a crucial win for the Deccans

A brilliant effort by Virat Kohli (58 off 35 balls) and a cotrolled knock by Kallis (68 off 44 balls) helped the Royal Challengers Bangalore put up a total of 184 for six in their stipulated 20 overs, even though at one stage it looked like they would struggle to score 150. Anil Kumble, again fiddled with the batting order, sending Rahul Dravid up at one drop, and yet again it misfired. Dravid managed to score just 26 out of 25 balls before giving it away.Had some one like Robin Uthappa or Ross Taylor got to play those deleveries, they could have scored at a doubly faster rate. Having in form batsmen at your disposal and not using them is just foolish. This very fact lead to Robin's dismissal as he found the urgency to go after the bowling as soon as he took his guard.

Deccan, till yesterday's encounter, had lost all 5 matches this season while chasing, hence were a bit concerned to chase down this total. But Suman, batting up the order, played a sensible knock (78 off 57 balls), and Symonds played as only he could. He scored 53 off 24 balls under tremendus pressure and sealed the fate of the match by the time they got to play the first two deliveries of the final over. This was the knock that the doctor ordered, as around that many runs were required in the final 24 balls.

Vinay Kumar and Praveen Kumar were found wanting when they needed to apply pressure, as Symonds scored at will. In a post match interview though, he heaped praise on Suman giving the entire credit to him. That was a nice gesture on Symonds' part.

Deccan with this win have kept their chances alive in this tournament, where apart from Mumbai and KXIP, every other team's fortune seems to be wildly swinging with each on going match.

Rajastan and KKR register wins

In the Wednesday double header, Rajastan Royals defeated KXIP and KKR put it across Delhi Dare Devils. Both the team needed to win their matches badly, and they did so. As a result, KXIP now, are officially out of the race for the semis, as no permutation combination would help them make it in the top four. KKR, with this victory have kept their chances alive in this tournament. They have to win every match hereafter and they know it.

In the first match, chasing a decent total of 153 for six, Rajastan Royal raced to victory in 15 overs as Michael Lumb blasted 83 runs off 43 balls. He has been in great form and he is using it to good effect. Naman Ojha (44) and Yusuf Pathan (21) also chipped in with useful knocks. This win puts them in a joint 4th position if net run rate is not considered, and this is vital, as they are left with only 3 more matches.

The other match saw Sourav Ganguly at his best yet again both with the bat and on the field. KKR remembered their loss the other night, when they could not restrict KXIP even after scoring 200 runs. So in this match against Delhi they strived to make amends and suceeded due to a total team effort on the field brilliantly lead by Dada. While batting Sourav scored a 46 ball 56 to help KKR set a target of 182 for Delhi, and on the field he ran Gautam Gambhir out, also took a brilliant catch to dismiss Kedar Yadhav. Delhi, despite of Sehwags 64 in 40 balls, fell short of the target by 14 runs eventually.

CSK on a roll

A collective effort from the bowlers helped Chennai Super Kings to tame Mumbai on a decent batting track. They won by 24 runs and moved to the 4th place in the points table. While Ashwin and Tushara claimed two wickets each, Tyagi, Bollinger, Jakati and Raina shared one wicket each to seal the fate of MI in the match. That they batted recklessly after Sachin went in to nurse dehydration, didn't help their cause either.

Earlier, winning the toss CSK opted to bat. Despite of non of the batsmen getting a big score, the team posted a decent total of 165 for the loss of four wickets. Hayden (35) was their highest scorer and the others chipped in with a few useful contributions.

In reply, Mumbai started confidently and were cruising at one stage at 62 for one during the 9th over, when Tendulkar had gone off the field. When he came back on to the field at 14.2 overs his side was reeling at 89 for seven. They had lost 6 wickets for 27 runs in space of 32 deliveries, and it was always going to be hard to recover from such a lapse.

Eventually the MI could manage only 141 runs, handing Chennai their 5th victory in 10 matches. CSK are on a roll here, and are back in the reckonings for a semi slot.

Khan vs Khan : Whose name is Khan?

So, the great rivalry between the two Khans continues, or, at least the paparazzi make us believe so. Ask either Aamir or Shahrukh about their cold war, you already know what you would get for an answer,"We are good friends, this rivalry or coldwar or whatever you call it, is all creation of media." Oh really? So be it. Who are we to dispute? Lesser mortals like us form our opinion from what we see in page 3, what we read in their blogs, twitter or press. We would try and find out the reality on another occasion. This space, I thought, could be better utilised to summarize my perception of two of my most favorite actors in Bollywood in present day.

Aamir Khan, comes from a family that had been long related to the industry. Tahir Hussain, his father was a producer, while Nasser Hussain, his uncle was a producer-director-actor. It was but natural that Aamir took to acting. He made his debut as a main lead through Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, which was a runaway hit. This movie established Aamir as the young heart-throb of the nation. Movies like Dil, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar followed and elevated him to mega stardom in bollywood.

Shahrukh Khan, on the other hand, had no connections with the industry. He made his acting debut in television (Fauji, Circus), enjoyed some amount of success there and made a natural progression to the big screen. He made his debut in Deewana and took the nation by storm by his passionate potrayal of the love struck character of Raja. If Baazigar and Darr made him a house hold name, DDLJ made sure that he was ruling everybody's heart.

Both these actors have delivered numerous hits after their initial period of success and have proved to have been the best thing to have happened to main-stream cinema after Amitabh Bachchan. We are not going to discuss their filmography here, all of us are aware of that. We would also not fall into the trap of arguing who is a bigger star, we have had enough of that over the past two decades. What we would do here is, we would compare and contrast both these stars' strengths, their approach towards their profession in general and to different characters in particular. To put a disclaimer right here, the opinion expressed in this post is solely mine, and is based on my own understanding of both these actors from whatever materials I could gather. You would have your own, which you may post down here as comments, as that would add tremendus value to this post.

Aamir, I have come to believe, after following his career over the years, is a man of method. His approach towards a role is perfectly calculated. He reads, understands, feels and then decides if he wants to play a particular character. Once decided, he goes into thorough research to form an idea on how that character would react to different situations in real life, how he would walk, talk or behave. He then prepares a mental blueprint of what his every move would be, as per the script, during filming. So when light-camera-action is called, all he needs to do is to enact his thoroughly researched but completely finalised blue print in front of the camera. That leaves no room for any ambiguity in his approach during the shoot and all his pre-shoot hard work and effort seals almost every loophole in the final product. That's why we call him a perfectionist.

Shahrukh, on the contrary, is a spontaneous actor. He lets his heart dictate his moves in front of the camera. He was never a method actor, but a versatile one. He has got terrific screen presence and can generate unbelievable chemistry with his audience through the camera. That is his strength.  The very fact that he goes by his instincts while playing a character, has sometimes gone against him, a section of public accuses him of playing himself in most of his movies. But the same public line up in front of theatres, every time a new movie of Shahrukh is released. Therein lies his success.

Where Aamir is way ahead of Shahrukh is in his selection of roles. He knows his limitations extremely well and selects characters well within his comfort zone. So while he seems to be doing a variety of roles (which he indeed does, as he experiments much more than any of his contemporaries), he is intelligent enough to tactfully avoid those kind of roles that would show off his limitations as an actor. Only one out of ten times would he have failed in his interpretation of a character (remember Mangal Pandey?). Roshan Seth had rightly pointed out how it was a rare failure of Aamir in terms of performance. He has been even more careful ever since.

Another plus point of Aamir lies in his detailed knowledge of the medium. Coming from a family of  film-makers, he was always aware of the finer technicalities of movie making. He, as it is often said, is a born director. He has often been accused of interfering in his directors' work, to which he explains that he doesn't interfere, he only adds value by providing his inputs. Senior directors like Mahesh Bhat had not taken this attitude of Aamir so sportingly at one point of time. That of course, is a different matter all together, here the point  is, Aamir's through technical knowledge puts him at an advantageous position vis-a-vis his competitors.

On the other hand, Shahrukh Khan has been a people's actor. He is a self-confessed entertainer. Mind you, this too is no cake walk. Its not easy to make people believe in madness. Shahrukh not only entertains you through his stylish portrayal of characters, he make you believe in him, if not always in the character he plays. When he says "Main Hoon Na!", you feel as if he is really there for you. As most of his female co-stars have admitted, when Shahrukh romances a girl, it just feels so real. This is bound to transmit to his audiences, through the eye of the lense, and it indeed does, as even his worst critic would agree. The energy that he exudes is infectious!

Another myth about Shahrukh is that he is arrogant. But to state the truth, he is a very humble and down to earth person. The context in which he keeps saying he is the best is misunderstood. Shahrukh, at one point of time was a sportsman. He still thinks like a sportsman. So at times, this sportsman's on-your-face attitude comes through his interviews, and is often not taken in right perspective by the media. But one must understand that Shahrukh Khan is intelligent enough to be well aware of where he stands as an actor or a human being. For whatever he has achieved in his career, anybody would love to swap places with him, he knows very well that he doesn't need to blow his own trumpet. As his close associates like Karan Johar or Farah Khan would confirm, it's his tongue-in-cheek style, that is blown out of proportion, just for the sake of cheap publicity.

Aamir and Shahrukh, both have achieved tremendus success in their illustrious careers adopting their very own methods. It's really foolish to judge which is a better way,as what is right for one might be absolutely out of place for another. So if one says Aamir is better, you could argue that Shahrukh is the "Baadshah of Bollywood" (Not for nothing such a tag is bestowed upon him) and if another says Shahrukh is better, you would have Aamir's mind-blowing filmography to counter him.

So what's the moral of the story? Instead of getting into this end-less comparison act, lets enjoy what both these wonderfully talented artists have to offer, while they are at it. If compare we must, we would leave that for another day, maybe till they hang their boots, and who knows, even then we might find ourselves at the same cross-roads!

Rajastan Royals win a thriller

The Rajastan Royals held on to their nerves in a tight encounter, that went on till the penultimate ball of the match and emerged victorious by just 2 runs in a edge-of-the-seat thriller. This victory, propelled them to the 4th position in the points table with 4 matches still to go.and leaves them in a very hopeful position to make the semis.

Last night, they won the toss and elected to bat on a perfect batting track. Though they didn't exactly have a dream start to their innings, Shane Watson came to their rescue yet again, scoring a valuable 58 off 36 balls. Faiz Fazal too chipped in with an important 36 off 29 balls. There were no other significant contributions from any other batsman, as a result, they were bundled out for 159 in 19.5 overs.

This was not going to be too tough a chase for the Deccans, but they too had a lone warrior in Rohit Sharma, apart from a cameo at the top from Gilchrist (34). Still, at one stage, it looked like the Deccans are cruising to victory, when they were 5 for 137 in 17 overs. This was the time when the spin wizard Warne came to the party, claiming 4 wickets, which reduced Deccans to a point, where their only hope was Rohit Sharma.

Rohit to his credit, did his best to bridge the gap between the balls remaining and runs to be scored, and managed to bring it to a stage where just 6 runs were needed from the last over. At this juncture, Warne tossed the ball to Siddharth Trivedi, who bowled an excellent last over under pressure, claiming RP Singh, running out Harmeet Singh and then forcing Rohit Sharma to go for a lofted drive, which was gobbled up at sweeper cover by Abhishek Raut to mark the end of the Deccan Innings.

Rajastan Royals won this match by 2 runs and are looking determined for an even better show in their remaining encounters.

Bangalore loses to Delhi yet again

It was a Collingwood special that helped Delhi post 184 for five in their alloted 20 overs. A Sehwag-Warner flyer at the top had helped Delhi race to a good start, but afterwards a few quick wickets put brakes on their scoring rate. Sehwag scored 35 and Warner 32, in 22 balls each, before falling in their effort to up the tempo further. Here, Collingwood stood firm, rotated strike and unleashed his strokes towards the end in a total controlled manner. 184 was a wining total under normal circumstances, but with the strong batting line up of the Royal Challengers, one could never relax.

But in their run chase, the RCB opened with White for some inexplicable reason, and KP coming in at one drop badly struggled. He could score just 16 in the 19 balls that he faced and along with Kallis considerably slowed up the scoring rate. Kallis, though scored a half century in 42 balls, never succeeded in catching up with the required run rate and then wickets fell at regular interval. Eventually they fell short by 37 runs.

I'm not sure, why one would send White at the top despite of having a regular opener in Uthappa. Even Virat Kohli would have been a better choice, if the captain wanted to use the heroics of Uthappa towards the end. But going by thumb rule, that was a foolish move, and at the end of the match, it did prove foolish.

RCB have now slipped to the third place below Delhi, they better get back to their winning ways. It's never safe out there, the third and fourh positions.

Mahela makes it 2 out of 9 for KXIP

Finally a convincing win for KXIP! It took nine matches and 7 humiliating defeats to make them bat out of their skin and overhaul a huge total, that was earlier posted by a spirited KKR. True, 200 was not an easy total to chase. Chris Gayle had finally came into his own in this encounter and smashed a terrific 42 ball 88 to propell KKR to this huge total. In course of his inning he had scored the most number of runs in an over (33) in IPL. The bowler to suffer was Ravi Bopara. Four consecutive sixes and a boundary was what he had hit and Ravi added to it by bowling a wide ball that went past a diving Bisla to the ropes. Ganguly (36) and Tiwary (35) too joined in with useful contributions.

KXIP, this time opened with Bisla and Mahela, and what an inning this gifted player from Srilanka played! He scored an unbeaten 110 off just 59 balls to ensure that their side does not lose yet again. And when things started to look a bit tight, Yuvraj came in and exploded, scoring 33 of 16 balls that sealed the match with 10 balls to spare.

KXIP are already out of the race for the semis, but this victory does change the equation for KKR a bit. They now find themselves in the fifth place and they have got quite a bit up catching up act to do in their remaining matches.

Mumbai Indians keep it simple

It was yet another perfect day at office for the Mumbai Indians. They batted, bowled and fielded as well as they would have liked and closed out the match as professionally as you would like.

While batting, it was a collective effort, but Rayudu's knock stood out. He scored 55 in 29 balls, helping Mumbai put up a decent-to-big total of 178 for five. Sourav Tiwary's 44 and Sachin's 35 were the other significant cntributions.

Just to mention a point on Rayudu, this talented lad has come a full circle in his young career. Touted as the next best thing in Indian cricket as a under 17 player, he grew in stature, as well as attitude, which eventually saw his downfall, and joining the so called rebel ICL. That he is back and performing, augurs well for his future. He is still young, still hungry and still talented. If he can put mind over matter, we would have yet another option at our hand.

Back to the match, in reply, the Deccan innings fell apart all over the place. With no significant contributions, the story of the last time winners has been as volatile as it has been for all other teams except for MI and KXIP at both the extremes. They were eventually all out for 115 in the 19th over, in effect slipping to the bottom of the points table, figuring just above the KXIP.

This has been a tough tourney for the Deccans.

Vijay's ton powers CSK to victory over Rajastan

The secret is out, a new Murali Vijay is born! This is not quite the same orthodox, easy, purist's delight, but fit-for-the-longer-version Vijay we knew. With every match, he is just growing in confidence and starting to display his wide array of strokes, which were hitherto reserved for more onorthodox kind of batsmen. That he is doing it with a straight bat most of the time, has added to the joy of watching him play. He is able to clear his front leg and cart the bowlers effortlessly out of the park. If you were amazed by the 37-ball 100 by Yusuf Pathan, now comes this 56-ball 127 from Murali Vijay.

Both are completely different players. I must admit that, hitherto, I was not a great advocate of players like Vijay or VVS Laxman in this format of cricket. I always believed Vijay is a very talented guy, but more suited for test matches. Yusuf, on the other hand is a player whose strength is to clear the ropes everytime he sights a ball in his half. So, I was as much amazed by this knock from Vijay, as I would be if I get to watch Yusuf score a hundred in a test match in England against frightful lateral seam movement.

Vijay did it in an earler match, and to make a points to critics like me, repeated it with a hundred to show that the earlier knock was no flash in the pan. Added to that, Albie Morkel scored a 34-ball 62, and CSK were off to the highest IPL total of 246 for 5.

On a perfect batting track, the Rajastan Royals were not to be left too far behind. Even though they lost the match, they had managed to score 223 for 5 in their alloted 20 overs. Naman Ojha, the man in form had scored 94 not out in 55 balls, Watson. playing his first IPL match this season amassed 60 of just 25 balls. Yusuf's failure were a big blow to the RR, else they could even have overhauled this mammoth total.

The CSK are slowly clawing their way back, beware!

How to lose a cricket match- KXIP style

Yeah, this could be the next best seller 'how to' book, if the KXIP do manage to write it. More than a couple of occassions, this team has found itself in winning positions, but the way they have managed to surrender the advantage to the opposition  amazes me. In this match against the RCB, they did everything they could to lose the match, and finally succeeded in their effort. They dropped easy catches at crucial positions, missed fieldings and allowed the ball to go for boundaries when there were not even singles there, they let go the run out chances, not to mention their bowing and fielding efforts. On a certain occasion, Sangakkara not only missed a crucial catch, but kicked the ball across the ropes.

Earlier, helped by some good batting efforts from Sangakkara(45), Ravi Bopara(42) and Yuvraj(36), KXIP had managed to put on board a decent total of 181 for 5. But when they took the field, catastrope struck. Despite of claiming Kallis's wicket early, they allowed Peiterson(66) and Manish Pandey(29) to put up a good parnership. KP continued the good work in Virat's company. But when Virat fell, the very next ball KXIP had the chance to send back Kevin. Instead they gave away a boundary. This was one of the many such efforts that was the order of the evening.

Even then at one stage, they had the comfort of 48 runs that were needed by the RCB off 24 balls. Unlike the other night, when Mahela had tossed the ball to a non-regular bowler in Bopara and lost the plot and the match, Sangakkara decided to go for  their most experienced bowler Brett Lee. The batsman was Robin Uthappa. He displayed some awesome hitting(22 off 8 balls) and RCB collected 25 runs from the over. Brett Lee too helped RCB by bowling a ball well outside legstump which crashed into the sightscreen, conceding an extra ball and 5 runs.

Even after this debacle, the KXIP were not done for the night. They dropped KP once more, missed more balls on the field and ensured that RCB doesn't lose from there.

Winning just one out of 8 matches, they don't go anywhere from here, may be they have a few more ideas to teach us, a few more how (not) tos!!

A Dada special does it for KKR

Sourav Ganguly, finally played a perfect modern day T20 innings, blasting 88 off 54 balls, which helped KKR set a total of 181. Not that he was awfully out of touch, he had scored two 30s and one 50 in the run up to this inning. The problem was that, he was consuming far too many deliveries for this format. But on this occasion, making amends, he blasted 5-sixes and 9-fours, the best being a Pragyan Ojha over, where dada took 21 runs. He found an able partner in David Hussey, who scored a 27-ball 31 to allow him the freedom to go for his shots.

In reply, the Deccans started well, despite of losing Gilchrist early. GIbbs threatened to put them in the driver seat, and when Symonds joined him, Deccan looked like giving KKR a good run for their money. But as Gibbs fell trying to repeat one of his most productive shots over long on, it became difficult for his team to maintain the stiff asking rate. Gibbs had scored a 45-ball 50 before Shane Bond removed him. Symonds, despite of scoring a well made 45 off 37 ball, could not prevent the inevitable. Deccan could manage only 157 in 20 overs, losing the match by 24 runs.

KKR keep on springing surprises every now and then, and this result has helped them move to the joint 4th place in the table (5th if net run rate is considered), and they would certainly take a lot of heart from this victory.

Vijay helps Chennai secure much needed victory, DD too good for RR

RCB, helped by a Kallis half century (52), and useful contribution by almost all its' batters, posted a total of 161 for 4 in their alloted 20 overs. This looked like a decent total, given the bowling options that RCB has. But Murali Vijay had other ideas. He came out to bat in a different frame of mind, and by the time he finished, he had put CSK in a position, from where if they were to lose the match, they would have had only themselves to blame. Suresh Raina stood firm to ensure no such drama happens, and the CSK cruised to victory thereafter, notwithstanding the minor hiccups in Dhoni and Morkel's dismissals. Vijay, played the innings of his life with a 39-ball 78, which was studded with 6 sixes and 4 fours. The fact that he had managed to do that with proper cricketing shots, re-establishes the effectiveness of pure batsmanship even in this format.

In the end, what was important for CSK was that, they had secured a desperately needed victory.

In the second match of the day, Delhi Dare Devils' total of 188, powered by a 38 ball 69 from Dinesh Karthick, proved too much for the Rajastan Royals. Eventually, they were bundled out for 167, handing DD a huge victory margin of 67 runs.

This helped Delhi to move to the second place in the points table, and they seem to have recovered from the temporary slump, that happened to them after a prominent start to the season. The winning streak of the RR are broken now and they find themselves in the fourth place in the table.

The competition is hotting up, really.
